Phuket
Tropical paradise
Phuket provides a spectacular list of activities for any discerning traveller. Hit the beaches first, like Patong, Karon, and Kata. These popular beaches are the centre of all partying in Phuket. By day, these stretches of fine sand are crowded with tourists sunbathing, surfing, and diving. Pick up these hobbies yourself by attending short courses from the many surf shops that dot the area. At night, these beaches turn up the volume on go-go music, enticing many to stay for a cocktail or two before dancing the night away.

Move away from party central and hit up Phuket Old Town for a little more cultural involvement. Go on a Phuket Heritage Trail for an interesting and educational insight into Phuket. Guides will bring travellers through Thalang Road and Krabi Road, looking at buildings and monuments built by the first few immigrants to the place. Many of the mansions and bungalows built by the first few settlers are still around and are open for visiting.

Take a break in between sightseeing by stopping at a roadside cafe or street stall. These mobile hawkers sell just about anything - pad thai, khanom bing, and even spring rolls. Wait kerbside for these skilled chefs to fry up aromatic plates of noodles flavoured with fresh seafood, chicken and fish sauce, and order up a practically neon orange cup of Thai iced tea for a cheap and filling on-the-go meal.

Continue on the day with a myriad of activities. The popular tourist destination has drawn all sorts of sports, such as white-water rafting, elephant trekking, bungee jumping, island-hopping, parasailing, rockclimbing and more. The more subdued can also opt for relaxing spas, massages and spiritual yoga classes (by the beach, no less). Most hotels and resorts will provide concierge help for guests in need of recommendations.
