Manila: Capital of Contraries
Asia’s other ‘Pearl of the Orient’, Manila is a treasure hiding under a shell of metropolitan chaos and shanty gridlock. Polishing and reinventing herself through the years of human and natural disasters, which includes being the headquarters of the Allied forces during World War 2 and her continuous battle against poverty issues that comes with being a megacity, Manila is a city both historic and modern, rich and poor.
Get to know the city’s tender soul with a walking tour of her courtyards and cobbled streets within her oldest district, Intramuros. Labelled as the historic core of the capital, the Walled City (Intramuros means ‘within the walls’) was the seat of the then Spanish rule in the Philippines, but is now identified by the three-mile stone walls that surround the district. Accessible only through the small opening near the Pasig River, your fortification discovery is akin to navigating several stone curtains that moves anti-clockwise, and passes the famous landmarks like Fort Santiago, San Agustin Church, and Casa Manila (the last being the pet project of Imelda Marcos, the wife of the former President of the Philippines and owner of the 7,000-shoe collection).
Then, join the present residents at the urban Luneta, or more officially, Rizal Park. A memorial to the national hero that led to the Philippine Revolution, the 60-hectare park is made up of open lawns, ornamental gardens, and proud statues of past heroes that stand witness to the various community events held there. Consider a bout of arnis de mano, an exclusively Filipino form of martial arts, or a game of chess at the Chess Plaza, before settling in for the evening at the open-air auditorium, which hosts the likes of the Manila Symphony, Broadway Nights, and Ballet at the Park performances.
Next, drop by Chinatown on board a traditional kalesa (horse-drawn carriage) after your hour-long tour of the area. The home of Catholic-converted Chinese merchants since the 16th century, Binondo is one of the world’s oldest concentration of the ethnicity and home of the Binondo Church, which was built in 1596. Currently, it is known as one of the Philippines’ cultural troves for everything culinary, as the many small roads of the district host the stalls carrying dishes like kiampong fried rice, Dong bei-style dumplings, and oyster omelettes.
