Paris, France: City of Food and Light
Take to the French way of savouring one of the most romantic cities in the world as you flâner (or stroll) your way down one of the first gas-lit streets in Europe. A getaway destination for the architecture enthusiast, art admirer, and coffee aficionado, France’s most populous city will not shy away from sweeping you off your jet-lagged feet.
Consider a quick dash through your list of the must-snap locales like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomph, and the Notre Dame cathedral, before moving on to where the locals relax, like the boutique stretch of Canal St. Martin. Endearingly called the ‘real Paris’ by Condé Nast Traveler, the bourgeois bohemian location is your day’s spot for a cream coffee which is enjoyed with views of the sun-dappled streets while eavesdropping on a Parisian exchange.
Next, discover the legendary cuisine of the city’s bistro and restaurants (which are open for lunch and dinner), or cafés and brasseries (which open all day for casual dining) as you trawl through your choices of Michelin-starred or à la mode meal. Practice your enunciation with the day’s pickings of foie gras (pronounced fwah-grah), charcuterie (shahr-cute-eh-REE), and hollandaise (oh-lahn-DEZZ), before settling into a plate of macarons (mah-kah-ROHN) or crepes (crehp).
Then, close the day with a quiet walk through some of the 60-odd museums which pepper the city, where most are opened for free on the first Sunday of the month. Breeze past the flurry of photographers at the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, and side-step into the smaller museums which house the iconic Monet’s Nymphéas (water lily murals), as well as the popular contemporary exhibits of fashion and wine. Sign up for a Museum Pass, and get free entry to the iconic landmarks and art galleries without the need to queue or gawk at the more fashionably-dressed crowd.
